Creative Writing for Middle School

This is a fun class that will teach your child about the craft of fiction writing through a quick survey of short stories. Students will read several different genres of short stories before writing one of their own! Optional vocabulary work included.

FLAGSHIP COURSE (12PP)
Ancient Literature I & Intermediate Composition
Two semesters, September 2027 - April 2028, 1.5-2.0 credits (2-in-1 course)

Students will start The 12-Paper Plunge (12PP), have Ms. Finnigan as their writing coach, and write 6-8 papers throughout the year, all while reading and discussing the classic poems and tragedies of Ancient Greece. Grammar program and two hard copy study guides included. (We’re going to Greece two months after this class ends! Your student can join us! Learn more.) Recommended: 9th grade.

Ancient Literature II & Advanced Composition
Two semesters, September 2027 - April 2028
$957 or $897 for folks who sign up early and help us meet our minimum.
Students will discover the great works of Latin (Roman) literature, and learn how it developed from the earliest days of the Republic through the Golden Age to the Silver Age. Students will write two more “12-Paper Plunge” stye papers, but will also be pushed beyond the limits of the five-paragraph essay, discovering new organizational strategies and techniques of argumentation, refining their style, and experimenting with new genres. Recommended: 10th grade.

Literature III: Medieval and Renaissance
Two semesters, September 2027 - April 2028

Students can expect to study the resurgence of the Liberal Arts and development of the Humanities in the aftermath of the decline of Rome. This will also lead students to further develop their writing and speaking skills in conjunction with the historical rise of Democratic philosophy and political view of education. Students can expect to deepen their knowledge of the rhetorical arts and skills in persuasive speaking through paper writing which will build upon their previous experience in Intermediate and Advanced Composition, as well as introduce them to new exercises such as the art of Declamation, Socratic seminars, and more frequent mock-debates. The Medieval period will also introduce students to a wide range of theological texts from the Church fathers and Doctors as they sought to better define and contemplate the Church, her role in the world, and man’s ultimate End. This course will include great works such as the Beowulf poem, Machiavelli’s Prince, various works by Thomas Aquinas, Dante’s Purgatorio, and a variety of Shakespeare’s plays including Hamlet, King Lear, A Winter’s Tale, and Henry V. Recommended: 11th grade.

Creative Writing for High School
Two semesters, September 2027 - April 2028
$897 or $857 for folks who sign up early and help us meet our minimum.
Students will read poetry in semester one and write at least three, original poems. Students will read classic short stories in semester two and write one, original short story. The emphasis in this class will be on quality over quantity, so the students should expect to work with sustained attention on their creative pieces for several weeks or several months. Recommended: 12th grade.

Middle School
English Literary and Language Arts
Two semesters, September 2027 - April 2028
$897 or $847 for early birds who help us meet our minimum
This course was designed as a remedial grammar course for 8th graders, but we’ve had 6th-10th graders enrolled. The language component will provide a thorough overview of English spelling, grammar, and syntax, beginning at the level of letter and syllable and expanding to the word, the sentence, and even the paragraph. Its literature component is designed around the books which form the moral imagination and prepare the mind for the Great Books.

Not a “pre-requisite” but highly recommended and strongly encouraged for students who wish to enroll in Ms. Finnigan’s flagship course, Ancient Literature I & Intermediate Composition as freshmen.
Introduction to Expository Writing
8 weeks, Late September 2027 - November 2028

A great first writing course and a great first online course, ideal for 6th graders or writers who say they “don't know what to write.” There is no reading in this class. It’s a nice and easy introduction to writing.
