The 12-Paper Plunge
A curriculum-free writing and thinking program that integrates writing with the humanities and aims to get high school students writing at a college level by the end of a 12-paper cycle.

Students only need to watch 4 hours of video. Then they write 12 papers over 2-4 semesters, preferably in the freshman and sophomore years of high school.

The writing instruction was developed by Ms. Ellen Finnigan after many years of writing, working as a writing coach, and teaching literature and writing at the high school level. The training for parents and teachers has been developed and refined since 2023.

High schools can enroll their students and faculty. Homeschoolers can do it on their own or enroll their children in live classes with Ms. Finnigan. There are options for traditionally schooling students as well.
The GistWhat makes it different?
It was created by a real high school teacher who is also a writer and who has a long track record of success when it comes to teaching writing in high school (14 years and counting).
Most writing programs are complicated, but easy. This one is simple, but challenging.
This program integrates writing with the humanities. It does not stand alone.
Though it does not take a “classical” approach to writing per se (i.e. it is not based on the progymnasmata), it was designed to complement a classical education.

Components of the Program

Four hours of Ms. Finnigan’s “Greatest Hits” videos, time-tested and proven for over a decade!

The teacher, whether a school teacher or a homeschooling parent, must become a writing coach (not a paper “scorer”), trained in Ms. Finnigan’s method of assigning and grading papers.

An online grammar program (coming soon) helps students identify and fill learning gaps and correlates with grading methods.

A Note from Ms. Finnigan

Teaching writing always came naturally to me, but it wasn’t until I taught a freshman composition course that I realized what a waste of time “teaching writing” can be in high school: The curriculum I was required to use (for 32 weeks) did almost nothing to help the students write better essays in my literature classes. So I eventually developed my own (very concise) way of teaching writing in my literature classes which I continue to use and refine to this day.

How long does it take?

If it’s not a curriculum, what is it?

The 12-Paper Plunge is the name of both a program and a methodology. The program consists of Ms. Finnigan’s time-tested writing instruction (student training), combined with a method of assigning and grading papers (teacher training). There is also a grammar program and something big coming down the pipeline that will help schools and homeschools implement the program more easily and effectively.

Ms. Finnigan has noticed over the years that on average, after twelve attempts, 80% of students are writing at a college level.
Why a “plunge”?

1) In schools, the humanities teachers need to jump in together! But even in a homeschool, it requires at least two people: the writer and the teacher/coach. 2) It takes commitment. 3) It emphasizes depth over breadth. 4) It can be a bit of a shock to the system for students at first, but they always get through it!

What if I want this for my student but I don’t want to become my own student’s writing coach?
How about $500? Check out our teachers page.
Check out the parent page and take the quiz! But your best option might be to enroll the student in a camp or a course.
Can we just get the writing instruction without doing all the papers and without doing the teacher training?
Ms. Finnigan does occasionally offer short camps for high school and college students. But it won’t be The 12-Paper Plunge because without the practice, your student is unlikely to get the same results.
Ms. Finnigan has been developing her methodology for teaching writing since 2012. In 2023, after launching Teach to the Text, she created her popular 10-Day Writing Camp for students and a training program for homeschooling parents, which together evolved into the 12-Paper Plunge. In the 2024-25 school year, she piloted The 12-Paper Plunge at Our Lady of Victory in Littleton, Colorado, combining student instruction with professional development training for teachers. The program was implemented at two schools the following year (2025-26), and she added a rudimentary grammar program. Ms. Finnigan continues to develop and improve the program, with a new grammar program coming in fall 2026 and new tools for better implementation coming in 2027.

A Word About A.I.

I always wanted to be Sara Connor from the film The Terminator. Never did I imagine that teaching high school English would afford me that opportunity! But here I am, trying to champion writing in an age of A.I. On August 19, 2026, The Atlantic reported that Harvard was shutting down its Writing Center, many assumed because of A.I., which was “met with outcry shading into outrage.” But honestly, I was more surprised that Harvard even had a writing center! I thought those only appeared on campuses that were likely to attract the less academically ambitious. I used to say that The 12-Paper Plunge helped students to “write at a college level” but apparently Harvard students can’t even write at a college level anymore. Writing is dying in our schools, and I think that’s a terrible thing. If you agree, please join my coalition!
