The 12-Paper Plunge
A curriculum-free writing and thinking program that integrates writing with the humanities and aims to get high school students writing at a college level by the end of a 12-paper cycle.

Students only need to watch 4 hours of video. Then they write 12 papers over 2-4 semesters, preferably in the freshman and sophomore years of high school.

The writing instruction was developed by Ms. Ellen Finnigan after many years of writing, working as a writing coach, and teaching literature and writing at the high school level. The training for parents and teachers has been developed and refined since 2023.

The GistWhat makes it different?
It was created by a writer who is also a teacher who has a track record of success when it comes to teaching writing in high school in the 21st century.
Most writing programs are easy but complicated. This one is simple but challenging.
Because it was not created by a curriculum company, it was not designed to take up as much time as possible. It is streamlined, designed to produce results.
It integrates writing with the humanities. (It works “beside, between, beyond curriculum.”)
Though it does not take a “classical” approach to teaching writing per se (i.e. it is not based on the progymnasmata), it was designed to complement a classical education.

A Note from Ms. Finnigan
Creator of The 12-Paper Plunge
Teaching writing always came naturally to me, but it wasn’t until I was asked to teach a freshman course dedicated solely to English composition that I realized what a waste of time “teaching writing” can be: The curriculum I was required to use for 32 weeks did almost nothing to help the students to write better essays in my literature classes. So I developed my own, very concise way of teaching writing in my literature classes which I continue to use to this day.

The two go hand-in-hand when you teach writing alongside the humanities! Now I’m helping other teachers do for their students what I did for mine.

How long does it take?
There are four hours of video instruction for students. The teacher or homeschooling parent must also watch those videos and then go through some training to become a coach, before assigning the twelve papers, ideally over the course of 2-4 semesters in the freshman and sophomore years. Teachers and homeschooling parents have a lot of flexibility when it comes to implementation and pacing, and Ms. Finnigan remains available to her trained coaches for guidance and support as they are taking their students through the program.

If it’s not a curriculum, what is it?
The 12-Paper Plunge is the name of a program and a methodology. The program consists of Ms. Finnigan’s time-tested writing instruction (student training), combined with a method of assigning and grading papers (training that turns teachers into coaches). There is also a grammar program that correlates with grading methods.

Why 12?
Ms. Finnigan has noticed over the years that on average, after twelve attempts, 80% of students are writing at a college level. Not a scientific fact. Just a general observation. Some students will get there even sooner, by paper 6 or 7.

Why is it called a “plunge”?
1) Because in schools, the humanities teachers need to jump in together! But even in a homeschool, it requires at least two people: the writer and the coach. 2) It takes commitment. 3) It emphasizes depth over breadth. 4) It can be a bit of a shock to the system at first, but students always get through it!

How long has the 12PP been around?
Ms. Finnigan has been developing her methodology since she started working as a writing coach (2008-12). She refined it over the course of a decade while working as a high school teacher (2013-22). In 2023, she created a writing camp for students and some training for homeschooling parents, which evolved into the program for schools. In the 2024-25 school year, she piloted the program at Our Lady of Victory in Littleton, Colorado, combining student instruction with professional development training. The program was implemented at two more schools in the 2025-26 school year. In fall of 2026, the 12-Paper Plunge Homeschool Bundle was released. The grammar program was tested in 2025-26 and the updated version will be released in November 2026.

A Word About A.I.
from Ms. Finnigan
I always wanted to be Sara Connor from the film The Terminator. Never did I imagine that teaching high school English would afford me that opportunity! But here I am, trying to champion writing in an age of A.I. On August 19, 2026, The Atlantic reported that Harvard was shutting down its Writing Center, many assumed because of A.I., which was “met with outcry shading into outrage.” But honestly, I was more surprised that Harvard even had a writing center! I thought those only appeared on campuses that were likely to attract the less academically ambitious. I used to say that The 12-Paper Plunge helped students to “write at a college level” but apparently Harvard students can’t even write at a college level anymore. Writing is dying in our schools, and I think that’s a terrible thing. If you agree, please join my coalition!
